Following a dismal start to the 2022–2023 season, Chris Wilder was replaced as Middlesbrough’s manager by Michael Carrick in October 2022.Michael Carrick - Player profile | Transfermarkt

Prior to arriving to the Riverside Stadium, Carrick had very little managerial experience; as caretaker manager, he led Manchester United in just a few games.

But in the first season, the former midfield player went above and above to help Middlesbrough finish fourth in the Championship.

Even though the Teessiders lost to Coventry City in the play-off semifinals, the season was nevertheless successful for the team.

Cameron Archer, who signed on loan from Aston Villa, was a vital element of Boro’s first team that season.

With Chuba Akpom, the striker developed a strong relationship and went on to score 11 goals and dish out six assists in 20 league games.

In the summer of 2023, Archer permanently relocated to Sheffield United, a Premier League team, after thriving on Teesside.

The 22-year-old was part of a struggling Blades team that was demoted, and he was unable to repeat his form from the previous campaign.

Sheffield United agreed to pay £18 million for the striker, but the deal included a condition stating that he would return to Villa Park in the event that the Yorkshire team was demoted.

The forward, meanwhile, is back in the Midlands and his future is uncertain. Journalist Dominic Shaw of the Northern Echo has now offered insight into Boro’s position about the return of Archer to Teesside.

For Middlesbrough supporters hoping to see Archer return to the team, Shaw says it has always been quite improbable that he will play this summer.

The Englishman was reportedly not on the club’s radar at the beginning of the summer due to the likelihood and difficulty of securing a contract.

Although it is known that Archer wants to remain in the top league, Middlesbrough probably cannot afford the transfer cost needed to get him.

Middlesbrough still needs a striker in the current transfer window, even if they do not think a deal for Archer is feasible this summer.

With 11 goals in his past 12 games, Emmanuel Latte Lath enters the 2024–2025 season as Carrick’s primary number nine.

However, the North East outfit has few high-quality choices outside of Latte Lath.

Josh Coburn only managed five Championship goals in his final season, thus if Boro want to compete for promotion in 2024–2025, they will need a strong backup who can either compete with Latte Lath or step in for him in the event of an injury.
