On the first weekend of the 2024–25 Championship season, Jordan Williams, a summer recruit from Portsmouth, is excited rather than nervous about his journey to Leeds United. On Saturday, August 10, the League One champions will go to Elland Road with the intention of pulling off a massive shock.

The Whites are now the league’s favorites according to the bookies. After scoring 90 points in the previous season, Daniel Farke’s team finished third in the league, although Leicester City and Ipswich Town advanced automatically. Southampton’s 1-0 victory against West Yorkshire in the play-off final at Wembley condemned United to another season in the English football second division.

It will be Pompey’s first time playing in the second division since 2012, but United will be hoping to improve when the real thing starts next month. “It’s a brilliant first game and I’ve had a few messages from a few friends who are Leeds fans,” Williams, a Barnsley free agent, said. The first game will be exciting for the spectators because they are one of the biggest clubs in the division. We’re hoping for a sunny day so we can entertain our supporters with a show.

“Whoever we play in the Championship will be a significant team in their own way, regardless of who we play at this level. We just need to strive to be fearless and ambitious because we most definitely are.

We don’t have illusions; this season will be difficult at times. We will have highs and lows, and we will depend on our followers to get us through them.

“This is the reason we play football. Our goal is to play in front of as many spectators and as many elite players as possible in the largest venues. The game and season are sure to be captivating.”
